South London Area Judo Kata Course December 2009.A fantastic turnout with some 40 players representing 15 clubs form several organisations, coming from all over the South of England from as far as Glamorgan. This event was hosted at the Biggin Hill Judo Club. In addition to practising and learning Nage No Kata and Katame No Kata, some students went on to work on Gonosen No Kata.Come along and join us in March for the next course. South London Area Kata Course Sucess December 2009. (Full Report)The South London Area held their third kata course and grading weekend of the year on the 5th and 6th December 2009 at Biggin hill. The Kata course held on the Saturday attracted judoka from many different judo organisations and a total of fifteen clubs sent students to the course. Furthest traveller was Team BJC Junior Jack Anderson who travelled down for the weekend with his parents from Glamorgan. The morning was spent practicing Nage no kata under Sensei Richard Raymond, 6th Dan and in the afternoon Katame no kata was studied. At the end of the day all of the students were examined and received certificates of their achievement and for those grading the next day they had prequalified for the kata section of the grading. Some of the more experienced judoka worked on other kata and Team BJC member Peter Vincent demonstrated Gonosen No kata under the watchful eye of his instructor, Laurie Dalton. This particular kata assists the judoka by teaching and practicing a number of counters and it is important for a competitive judokas development. The South London Area hosts at least three courses a year and although the major grading kata are studied any grades wishing to practice other kata such as Ju No Kata or Kime No Kata can be accommodated. The many experienced South London instructors on the mat mean that the course is suitable for both seniors and juniors alike and all students from experienced kata exponents to beginners can benefit from the course. South London is a very proactive area within the BJC and not only provides these courses but also takes squads to compete in France and Holland on a regular basis. Anyone interested in kata courses, gradings, randori sessions and international judo events should review the South London Area Judo website or the Alwyn Judo Club Website. There are contact details on these sites and you can contact Laurie Dalton 5th Dan to be put on the email list of the South London newsletter to keep you updated of all forthcoming events Come along and join us in March for the next course. 16th Tournoi Europeen du Littoral 16th & 17th May 2009The South London Area Squad was in action in Dunkirk at the 16th Tournoi Europeen Du Littoral over the weekend of the 16th and 17th May 2009. Our friends from Dunkirk gave us some wonderful hospitality over the weekend for which we offer or thanks and we will certainly be seeing them again next year. The squad comprised of a team of seniors and a team of juniors competing in the team event on the Sunday and England Cadet Peter Vincent who competed in the individual competition on the Saturday. The group was a tough one with Peter winning the final against a Dutch Fighter. The fight was an exciting one with the Dutch boy taking the fight to Peter in the first couple of minutes but Peter’s fitness and ultimate motivational coaching saw Peter dominate the final stages of the fight winning on flags.Sunday saw the South London junior team up against two French teams in their group. The team was a new one this year and many of the juniors were giving away weight and they did well in their first competition at this level. The South London senior team did very well to qualify from their group with a fine win for the second place spot to take them to the last eight. All of the remaining English teams, South London, Dartford and Team BJC were eliminated in the last eight. The standard of judo was top class and the South London team, coached by Brian Curran, put in another solid performance. During the day on Sunday the young players were invited to train with Lucie Decosse (Pictured below). Lucie's list of honours include European, and World Champion and Beijing Olympic Silver Medalist. Pictured below with Lucie Decosse are Richard Raymond, Laurie Dalton and John Baseley from the South Londan Area. So, a great weekend with some excellent judo! South London Area Judo Kata Course March 2009.This event was hosted at the Aylwin Judo Club. In addition to practising and learning Nage No Kata and Katame No Kata, some students went on to work on Ju No Kata and Kime No Kata. The younger players are having Kime No Kata explained. (I'm glad they didn't ask about Ju No Kata.)South London Area Kata Course December 2008.This event was hosted at the Biggin Hill Judo Club. In addition to practising and learning Nage No Kata and Katame No Kata, some students (top) went on to work on the hands on the hips kataSouth London Success in Heerle, Netherlands.Aylwin Judo Club and the BJC South London Area took a squad of players to the St Nicolaas Toernooi in Heerle, Holland in November 2008. For some of the younger members it was their first trip to a foreign competition and a great opportunity to visit another country. The squad coaches were Richard Raymond, Laurie Dalton and John Baseley and the party included a number of enthusiastic parents and a long time supporter of the South London Area, Edi Horne, whose husband was a fourth Dan with the BJC. Also attending the competition from England was BJC club Washington from Newcastle. The competition itself was a very good standard with over 300 competitors from a number of the Dutch Clubs including some Dutch National players. All of the squad members fought very well and the squad took 3 Gold medals, 2 Silver medals and 3 Bronze medals with the rest of the squad being placed in the top six in their pools and receiving medals for this achievement. The medals winners included newcomers Liam Corbett (Gold), James Aris (Silver), Oscar Watts, Joseph Corbett and Scarlett Corbett (Bronzes) with seasoned campaigners and BJC National Squad members Peter Vincent and John Hisee (Golds) and senior Marc Hagone (Silver). The hospitality of the Garami Heerle Judo club was excellent providing meals and accommodation etc and a disco in the evening at the local centre where the English players stayed. Overall the weekend was very enjoyable and successful and thanks go to both the Garami Heerle Judo Club and to the coaches from Alwyn Judo Club who organised the trip.
15th Tournoi Europeen du Littoral 17th & 18th May 2008The South London Area went to Dunkirk to take part in an International Tournament. On the Saturday two players took part in the International Individual Competition and on the Sunday the players took part in the International Team Tournament.Peter Vincent and John Hisee (Pictured below left) both took gold medals in the individual tounament on the Saturday. Jordan Haughey, Liam Rowles, Adam Winchester, Jamie Caller and Lawrence Rowles (Pictured below right) took the silver team medal on the Sunday. All the players fought well in this tough international competition and displayed some excellent judo. By the end of the competition the junior team were only one contest short of the gold medal position. So, a very close competiton as usual. During the day on Sunday the young players were invited to train with Cecile Nowak (Pictured below). Cecile's list of honours include European, Olympic and World Champion. So, a great weekend with some excellent judo! Obituary Bob Horne 4th DanIt is our sad duty to report that Bob Horne, 4th Dan, aged 83 years, passed away on 18th April 2008 and was cremated on 30th April. Our deepest sympathy and condolences go to his wife Mrs Edie Horne and family.Bob was an excellent and conscientious judo instructor who guided many judo players, throughout his career, to high grades. Bob and his wife Edie were treasurers of the South London Area for 30 years. In addition, they both assisted at Aylwin Judo Club for some 25 years. Following Aylwin Judo Club Bob and Edie continued to assist at the Goldsmiths Judo Club until he, sadly, passed away. Bobs dedication and committment to Judo was beyond reproach and he will be greatly missed by us all. Kata & Grading Weekend March 2008On 8th and 9th of March the South London Area arranged a day of Kata on Saturday followed by day of Gradings on the Sunday. The picture below shows the primaries and some of the juniors who attended and took part in the grading. Thanks to all those who attended.Kata & Randori Session January 2008On 19th January 2008 the South London Area arranged a morning of Kata (Lower Picture) followed by an afternoon of Randori (Upper Picture) at Croydon Judo Club. As you can see many people attended both. During the kata session we practiced and worked on Nage No Kata and Gonosen No Kata. After a break for lunch we went into our 2 hour Randori session. The plan was to go for 2 hours straight but the attendees worked so hard that we had to stop for liquid 2 or 3 times. All those who took part had a great day and we are all looking forward to the next session. A special thank you to Croydon Judo Club for allowing us to use their magnificent purpose built facility. Obituary Bill Anscombe 3rd DanIt is our sad duty to report that Bill Anscombe passed away on 17th December 2007. Our deepest sympathy and condolences go to Mrs Theresa Anscombe and her family.Bill Anscombe founded the Ju Tora Kwai club in Brockley which under Bill's direction produced many excellent judo players. Many of Bill's students will remember a sensei who was humble and yet firm, never critisising but coaching in a positive way. Many of us will remember the contribution of Bill and his family in helping to orgasnise and run area events. Bill Anscombe was from the old school of judo and one of the few who understood it's true meaning "The Gentle Way".
